E-mail: schircks@schircks.comSchircks Laboratories, Switzerland was founded by Dr. B. Schircks in 1980 to synthesize pteridines. The company is independently owned and operated. Schircks Laboratories has ceased production of tetrahydrobiopterin. Biomarin has taken over the US market and Merck Serono the European market. They will continue to expand. They are responsible for the supply of tetrahydrobiopterin (Sapropterin dihydrochloride) in tablet form (Kuvan).
Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is the main product synthesized by the company. It is sold in tablet form for the treatment of tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency (former Atypical PKU) and for the treatment of some BH4 responsive PKU/HPA patients. It is sold as a powder for laboratory studies. Tetrahydrobiopterin tablets are not registered in Switzerland but the company is periodically inspected by 'Swissmedic' a branch of the health authority in Switzerland.
We have not registered BH4 anywhere in the world. It is sold as a trial preparation to hospitals and medical doctors (not private addresses) all over the world.
In 1981, only about 10 children were treated with tetrahydrobiopterin, produced by the company. In 2007 more than 250 children with variant forms of PKU receive a daily dose of tetrahydrobiopterin. The numbers continue to increase annually.
In addition to tetrahydrobiopterin, over 100 other pteridines are synthesized which are mainly used in science and clinical diagnostic applications. We are constantly developing and improving syntheses and starting new syntheses to meet the demands of research and development groups worldwide.
